In conjunction with Waste Services of the Bluegrass, Toyota developed a viable method to harness and convert the gas emitted by landfills into electricity to power it’s Georgetown, Kentucky manufacturing plant. Construction began this past April and is predicted to be completed by early next year. When the system goes into action in 2015, Toyota says it will produce one megawatt of electricity per hour and will produce enough electricity to power approximately 800 homes and the manufacturing of 10,000 cars per year.
Toyota’s Georgetown plant manufactures two hybrid models and has been a zero waste to landfill facility since 2006.
