Fame: A Cursed Blessing

Fame. Popularity. All words used to define celebrities and their reputation among the general audience. All words that give off a positive connotation, most of the times. But when looking in depth into the effects of fame, it can be completely visible to see that it is, in fact, a cursed blessing.

On March 25, 2015, band member, Zayn Malik, made the heartbreaking decision of leaving his band, One Direction. This news shook the world and caused instant outrage and cries by their fans all around the world. Twitter was blown up with worldwide trends with people sharing their opinions and offering their condolences to the many fans of Zayn Malik. Other fanbases were extremely supportive of ‘Directioners,’ as well. Overall, it was a sad moment for many people, and an event that became a topic on all news channels and talk shows. When such a tragic event occurs, it becomes important to analyze why exactly he left the band, after 5 years of incredible success.

The official statement from the One Direction Facebook account stated, “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

In other words, Malik wanted to lead a private life, where the paparazzi wouldn’t be after every single move of his and criticize the little things he does. Zayn and his fellow bandmates have been victim to harsh criticism by the entire world since a very young age of only 17. Zayn Malik, specifically, has always had a hard time dealing with the criticism, especially when his religion, Islam, would always be mixed with terrorism. Not only that, but him having the ‘bad boy’ image from the group only made it easier for magazine articles to accuse him of cheating on his fiancée over and over again and blame him countless times for drug abuse and other lowly things.

At the age where normal teenagers are about to enter college and have a taste of freedom, One Direction and Zayn had to work 24/7, rarely ever getting a break, from recording new music while on tour, attending award ceremonies, and performing in front of thousands each day. And along with that, the stress of being careful with every little action they did was always in their minds.

At such a level of fame that Zayn Malik and One Direction, along with many young celebrities, have reached, it is sometimes more of a curse than a blessing. Sure they get their taste of wealth by earning millions each year, but at the same time, they have to live through the hostile and rough comments thrown at them every single day. Zayn Malik was able to put his health and well-being before his job, and was able to uphold his self-respect, despite the negativity he knew he was bound to receive after this difficult decision. Although he won’t ever really be completely out of the spotlight, his decision was the right path for him to escape this cursed blessing of fame.
