Chipotle’s Stock Crisis

A recent outbreak in October 2015 has captivated everyone’s attention as hundreds of news reports dominate in about every news network. Chipotle, a franchise known for having the healthiest organic ingredients, has depreciated its stock price after several cases of E-coli were disclosed in numerous consumers. Reports reveal information about fifty-three customers who were infected with E-coli in nine states including Oregon, Washington, California, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Illinois, Marchipotle-2yland, and Pennsylvania. As a result, forty-three Chipotle restaurants closed for cautionary purposes. Although the commotion has ended with the solution of officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigating the issue and intensifying food safety procedures, Chipotle is still suffering through an immense decline in sales.
Customers discontinued the consumption of meals from Chipotle in fear that they would become infected with the virus. As seen in the image, profits plunged throughout the last four quarters. The chipotle.jpgpublic has lost faith in the quality of the food produced by Chipotle, causing them to abominate the restaurant for putting them at the risk of severe disease. The stock price has plunged to a disappointing $480 when it was originally $730 before the E.coli chaos. Investors have also lost faith in the company so they have sold stocks that they have invested earlier in the year. For this reason, the market value of the company has plummeted leaving the company at a loss. Merrill Lynch and CRT Capital, credit rating agencies, both downgraded Chipotle and five analysts cut their price targets for the company. As you can see, there are several factors that contribute to the slump of Chipotle’s wealth. While Chipotle is in a crisis to recover their sales, rivals celebrate as the previous Chipotle fans revert their preference to alternatives.

Data proves that Chipotle’s rivals are benefiting through Chipotle’s struggles. Many rivals had growth in sales as customers turned to alternative fast foods/restaurants. Some of these businesses include Taco Bell, Moe’s Southwest Grill, and Qdoba, all of which had a growth ranging from 4%-8%. Taking advantage of what has happened, sales increased with no extra marketing necessary because they have similar choices as the poorly repudiated, Chipotle. In addition, Chipotle lost market share to Qdoba, being its biggest rival and Meditteranean restaurant, Zoe’s Kitchen. Although Chipotle and Panera are said to be the two leading fast food chains for their healthy food choices, Panera may be taking the lead because of the E.coli outbreak.chipte stock.jpg

Not only is their reputation damaged, but profit margin may also be affected. The chain of restaurants may need to reduce their prices in the future so people start to buy their food once again. On top of low sales, the business will have a lower margin which may barely exceed their costs. The entire corporation is put at risk as it is possible for it be at default in the near future. Although these are only possibilities, Chipotle must take action to acquit their name. All in all, the erupted conflict resulted in improved cautionary procedures by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention which is one of the few beneficial impacts of the event that occurred. Going forward, other companies and Chipotle itself will be attentive so such action does not occur again.

How Much Do We Know About Coffee?

Coffee; Some people hate it whereas others cannot bear to live without it. Starbucks has made about $16 billion this past year and it has America’s addiction to coffee to thank. However, how much do we really know about coffee? We know that it gives us a boost of energy in the morning with all of that caffeine stored but apart from that, does it truly help us or is it actually harming our bodies?

As you probably expected by my previous sentence, coffee does not only provide benefits. Instant coffee and coffee passed through a paper filter have no bad effect on us but let’s face it, most of us love the sugary flavors added to our favorite drink. It is the added ingredients that are high in cafestol, which in turn raises cholesterol levels.

For pregnant women, coffee cannot be their best friend. This drink can cause miscarriages and low birth weight. Fetuses cannot metabolize caffeine in their stage of development, so it is encouraged for women to limit their caffeine intake while pregnant.

Thankfully, we can easily say that coffee provides us with some health benefits that most people would have never thought of. For older adults, coffee can help keep off Alzheimer’s disease for a longer period of time. It prolongs the cognitive impairment that leads to Alzheimer’s, therefore beneficial to the body.

Another disease, Parkinson’s disease, can be of lower risk to those who drink coffee. Men who drink coffee have a lower risk since the caffeinated drink prevents the nerve cells that produce dopamine from dying, which is the cause of Parkinson’s. Among women, it is slightly more complicated. Women that do not take any additional hormones are also of lower risk to Parkinson’s disease, but the women that take hormones do not receive the same benefit.

It also may lower the risk of most non-melanoma skin cancers, especially the most serious type, malignant melanoma. That is definitely something to celebrate about. There were studies that proved that coffee drinkers who had about four cups of coffee a day had a twenty percent lower risk of getting skin cancer than those who did not drink coffee whatsoever. However, there was another study that proved that decaffeinated coffee did not provide the same protection to people compared to caffeinated coffee.

Coffee can lower the risk of people getting one of the top ten health diseases: Type 2 Diabetes. Here is the surprise: it has nothing to do with the caffeine. Both decaf and caffeinated coffee help lower the risk, which means that there is something else that helps prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Scientists predict that the helping agent is chlorogenic acid, which is an antioxidant.

For those who have low blood pressure, coffee can help. It increases blood pressure, but fortunately it has no link to hypertension. However, it is still advised that those with high blood pressure switch to decaf to be sure.

Mentally, coffee benefits us tremendously. Apart from giving us a boost of energy, studies show that, among women, regular coffee drinkers have a lower risk for depression.

So obviously, we can say that the benefits of coffee outweigh the harmful effects. Starbucks may resume their daily sales of the addictive drink with its various complicated names.

The Truth About ADD and OCD

Many people playfully state that they have a mental disease, such as Attention Deficit Disorder or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, in order to explain certain behaviors. For example, students often blame their poor grades, inability to focus, and compulsiveness to cheat on ADD, when they actually do not try in school hard enough to excel. In terms of OCD, many will say that they have OCD if they like to organize their belongings in a certain way. Due to these fake claims, not many people know what it is actually like for people to suffer from these diseases.

Attention Deficit Disorder is a mental illness that can be broken down into three categories: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and the combined type. Unlike what the media portrays as ADD, it is not that easy to identify a person with ADD. A person with the inattention type will most likely:

  • Be easily distracted, miss details, forget things, and frequently switch from one activity to another
  • Become bored with a task after only a few minutes, unless doing something enjoyable
  • Have difficulty focusing attention on organizing and completing a task or learning something new
  • Daydream and move slowly
  • Not seem to listen when spoken to
  • Struggle to follow instructions
  • Possibly skip the entire list because it was too long to read

A person with the hyperactivity type will most likely:

  • Fidget and squirm in their seats
  • Talk nonstop
  • Dash around, touching or playing with anything and everything in sight
  • Be constantly in motion

The cause of ADD can be one of three things: environment, society, and primarily, genetics. It is treated, mainly, through medications. If a person with ADD takes their medications daily, then they will be able to lead a mostly-normal life. ADD tests, ever since people have been faking the illness, have improved to ensure that the people who really do have the disorder are getting the help they deserve.

OCD, on the other hand, is a little difficult to fake since the symptoms are much more drastic than those of ADD. Despite the comments that are made about the disease, it is a very serious malady that can drive one insane if not taken care of correctly. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a condition where people feel the need to take care of something, such as keeping themselves clean or organizing something to perfection, in order to soothe their anxiety. What people do not know is that there is more to OCD than just striving to be neat and tidy. Other symptoms of OCD include:

  • Seeking reassurance from others constantly – seeking reassurance from others is fine from time to time, but when the questions become increasingly repetitive, that is when you know you have OCD.
  • Counting – now this one seems a little odd, but people with OCD often count everything they do. This stems from believing in superstitions, such as the lucky number seven or the unlucky number thirteen. It comes to the point where they cannot get the numbers out of their head. For example, a person who is walking up the stairs may take them seven at a time just to ease their anxiety.
  • The need to check something obsessively – this includes pressing Ctrl-C ten times to make sure you copied something, making sure that the door is locked five times, checking that the stove is off three times, checking for errors in this sentence ten times, so on and so forth.
  • Having everything in uniform – And because I changed this sentence into italics, those with OCD will go insane to change it.

Although there aren’t as many symptoms as ADD, they are much more serious. A patient can spend hours cleaning their house and still not be satisfied. They might only be satisfied if the volume on their TV is a multiple of seven. Things like this may seem odd to most people, but their life is a nightmare if not treated correctly. For thirteen-year-old Megan, OCD conferences help her connect with others with OCD, which helped her cope with the illness. However, going to conferences do not help treat the disorder; medications, like for ADD, are given to the patients to ease their anxiety.

Real people everyday deal with diseases like these and rarely ever complain with what they have to deal with. Famous comedian Howie Mandel suffers with OCD and ADD; yet, he still continues to perform as a comedian and judge without having to sacrifice anything. Those people that claim to have certain mental illnesses when in reality they don’t cloud the truth about the maladies.

The Chipotle Effect

Recently Chipotle has proven to be extremely successful in terms of its quarterly earnings and customer satisfaction. This restaurant is now found across the nation and Chipotle has become easily accessible and a favorite for the majority of people who choose to eat there. One of the advantages of eating at Chipotle also includes the fact that it is considered by many to be one of the most healthiest restaurants out there. A man by the name of Andrew Hawryluk felt so strongly about this that he decided to carry out his own experiment.

Hawryluk is a 23 year old from Los Angeles and decided that he would eat Chipotle for 40 days straight. So he started to add photos of each meal he had to his website to prove to everyone that he was eating at the restaurant daily. Eventually at the 40 day mark, Hawryluk found himself to be disappointed since his experiment didn’t prove to be as exciting as he had anticipated earlier. He wanted to find out how long he could keep his experiment going so he continued to eat Chipotle everyday. As of now he has eaten at Chipotle for 154 days straight.
Everytime he goes to Chipotle he orders white rice, guacamole, chicken, and lettuce topped with the Tabasco hot sauce offered at each restaurant. Till now he has spent a total of $1,567 on Chipotle. Hawryluk has saved all those 154 receipts to prove all of this. The most important part of this was that he even posted a picture of his physique before and after starting this experiment and it was evident that Chipotle did not adversely affect his body in any way and has not caused him to gain weight.
Hawryluk insists that Chipotle is the best restaurant out there since it dominates all the essential qualities that a restaurant needs in order to survive and sustain itself. He now loves Chipotle so much that he refuses to go on a vacation anywhere that doesn’t have Chipotle nearby. Hawryluk has started planning his vacations based on the availability of Chipotle in the area. For example, he really wants to go to Berlin but he can’t because they don’t have a Chipotle.
Hawryluk finds Chipotle to be the most delicious meal out there and he challenges others to find another place that meets the essential qualities of a restaurant as well as Chipotle does. His experiment does make quite a good argument that Chipotle is definitely one of the best restaurants out there.

Precautions for the Summer – Don’t Hold Your Breath

As summer is approaching, most of us are planning days to go to the pool. Swimming is a sport that is perfect for the summer; it provides the cooling effect that people crave in the summer heat and the number of water games that have been invented make swimming a fun sport and pastime. However, these water games can lead to certain consequences, the most severe being death.

When children go to the pool, whether that be at the nearest YMCA, summer camp, or their friend’s backyard, there will always be that one game of “Who can hold their breath the longest?” This particular behavior, called the “dangerous underwater breath-holding behavior” by the CDC, is the leading cause of drowning. Unfortunately, some people do not survive after they are found underwater. This does not only occur in community pools; military academies witness this every year. In 2011, students performed intentional breath-holding exercises. After a while, the two drowned by performing this exercise. Most people, after hearing the warning from the CDC, think it is a harmless activity to hold their breath underwater, but the Center of Disease Control and Prevention has evidence proving that this is dangerous.

Normal breathing consists of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. By holding your breath, you are pushing the carbon dioxide out of your body, making it almost irresistible to take a breath. The people that hold their breath underwater may have done it regularly to hold their breath for a long time, but once that breath is taken underwater, they can drown in a matter of seconds. This happens to ten people everyday. Accidental drowning is also the second leading cause of death, immediately following car accidents.

In movies, when we see people drown, it is definitely a false depiction of what truly happens; no one flails their arms around and screams for help when they are drowning. There are key signs that will indicate whether or not the person is drowning: if their mouth is at water level, their head is tilted back, their eyes closed or glassy, or if they cannot talk.

Next time you head to the pool, advise the swimmers around you to not take part in the “breath-holding olympics” because it is a health hazard. This simple precaution can save hundreds of lives and the statistics of this terrible cause of death can decrease dramatically.

Mental Illness Medication

Unlike previous generations, young people today, more than ever before, face mental illnesses. Today’s pop culture – the music, tv shows, and movies – all show how teenagers, just like you and me, often turn to prescription drugs rather than choosing more beneficial options. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, about one in every five children is challenged with a battle with their own minds, as well as the negative stigma attached to it.  I myself have undergone through a similar time. A dark time of loneliness, fear and absolute depression. Constant fights with my friends along with the stress of school and family issues fed into it constantly, but I searched for the right solution, resolute in my attempts to overcome it. In a school as large as John P. Stevens, there are bound to be other cases of mental illnesses, and it is important to keep in mind that motivation to make the right decisions is the key to overcoming it. In an attempt to strike back against their disorders, teenagers often rashly choose prescription pills over therapy, an immediate solution that often leads to even worse outcomes. There are very few telltale signs to determine who is battling mental turmoil, and the student body of John P. Stevens is no exception. It could be your lab partner, or that shy girl in the back of the class – maybe even that confident boy who excels at public speaking. Having a mental illness doesn’t stop teenagers from trying to seem normal, for they too can post funny Snapchat stories and have creative Instagram posts. Most of the time, social media is but a facade, where people seem entirely different from whom they really are, and feelings are obscured by meaningless captions. Drug companies manufacture thousands of types of medications a year, which prove to be easy to obtain and use. These medicines have countless side effects and can oftentimes be more detrimental than give helpful results. Depending upon the illness, the side effects vary; they range from uncontrollable muscle spasms to hallucinations, along with paranoia and suicidal thoughts. The battle that these teenagers go through leaves them vulnerable, and their behaviors become unpredictable. With what they’ve had to face, most teenagers would be susceptible to anything – not just the side effects of their medicine – whether it be a harsh word or a rough day. I recall that in my experience, even the slightest bit of criticism or any sort of negative comment would set me off, leaving me in a well of tears and a pool of hopeless pessimism. Mental instability creates a state of fragility, which is why the need to be kind is emphasized so greatly. Simply a sarcastic comment or a meaningless joke can wreck all the progress they have made and ruin their day as well as their hopes of getting better, so really – just be nice. As reported by the National Institute of Medical Health, more than 80% of people that have a mental disorder don’t get the help they need, usually due to the treatment method they undertake. Without being addressed properly, mental disorders can last for a lifetime. Faced with not only social and political implications of having a disorder, children encounter biological impacts as well. Most of them hide their problems, even from their friends, afraid of the negative attitude it may cause, which may further worsen the isolation they stand against. I, myself, only told a trusted few about the intensity of my situation. Although initially, it proved to be difficult to expose the part of me that remained hidden from the rest of the world, there were countless breakdowns that my friends supported me through. It can really help to gain support from close friends, for they were the glue that held me together in dire circumstances. Physically, those who suffer from mental diseases can experience excessive weight gain, or excessive weight loss. Stress causes a varying response in different people – some tend to eat more, and some less. This can also lead to a troublesome result, causing body image insecurities which would then only aggrandize their problems. Teenagers respond more to psychological intervention than to medicine, because they release their thoughts like I did, and instead of constantly building up their emotional dilemmas, they are given advice and possible solutions to release them of further problems. The presence of a single mental disorder can lead to the accumulation of others, giving way to more stress and imbalance of the chemicals in their brain. As the pharmaceutical industry creates more and more products to help these teenagers, they are prompting them to take these pills without precaution, and remaining unaware of the other treatment options. Doctors suggest therapy, but by offering pills that they present as a substitute for talking to a professional and exploring different techniques that may help change their mindset, they are inclining teenagers to opt for medicine. Prescription medicine only provides a short term relief from their issues, and after it wears off, another dose needs to be consumed. However, therapy has proven to be a more reliable solution which eradicates the very root of the problem a child is going through rather than implementing a temporary fix. With most medication found in pharmacies, constant usage usually makes the user immune to it over time. This only calls for a higher dose to be required by the body, therefore requiring a purchase of more of a stronger medicine. Potent medicine, especially in teenagers, is found to give way to substance abuse, resulting in an overdose, which just creates a larger issue. Addiction to prescription drugs will simply augment their negative lifestyle, now causing a need for more medicine to create a high; it introduces an escape from the throes of their mental illness for a limited amount of time. We’ve all learned about drug abuse and the life threatening consequences it has, and that, along with a mental illness, is a concoction for a crisis. Children who have mental health problems are urged to simply take medicines rather than talking out their problems which isn’t directly the fault of a doctor, nor the condition the patient is in, but rather the seemingly easy solution offered by the pharmaceutical industry. They aren’t made aware of the dangers present that come along with these apparent panaceas. It is evident that teenagers facing any sort of mental illness or disorder should seek therapy and psychological help rather than simply opting for a bottle of pills. Facing their problems by discussing them with a professional therapist in order to conceive a successful method to help with their specific troubles and eliminating them is the more logical, and proven to be more successful, method of dealing with mental illnesses.

The Sharks are Back – More Dangerous Than Ever

Shark attacks are fatal. Everyone knows this. However, in the past four years, these attacks have increased dramatically. In La Reunion, a French Indian Ocean island, a thirteen-year-old boy, Elio Canestri, was killed by a shark while surfing.

When people heard this news, at once they thought that he was not careful enough in the ocean waters. However, this is untrue. Whenever Elio went out to surf, he always left a note for his parents stating that he would only surf if there was security. The Canestri family knew how dangerous the waters were and his father said that “[he] was someone who always listened to his parents. He analyzed danger intelligently, he was a competitor” (1). He, along with six other surfers, were killed by sharks. A lack of security was not the issue.

Since this predator is now increasing its presence in our lives, people have started to wonder why they are attacking humans “unprovoked” (2). They are not developing an appetite for humans, if that is what you are wondering. Shark researcher George Burgess concluded that the increase in shark attacks was related to the increase in human population. If the number of shark attacks had increased in a certain area significantly, then it is very possible that the human population in that area had increased significantly as well. It is also true that water sports such as jet skiing and surfing have become more popular as well. This is causing more humans to enter the “shark turf,” causing sharks to attack humans more frequently (2).

Unfortunately, Burgess states, the number of shark attacks will not decrease any time soon. In the next fifteen years, “attacks will become more common,” so it is crucial that humans should not enter the ocean waters at dusk, dawn, in the nighttime, or where someone is fishing (2).

Things You May Not Have Known About Your Brain

The human brain is the single most complex thing in the known universe. Even in this age of medical wonders, we still have not been able to uncover the full secrets of this incredible organ. However, we do know some things about the most important organ in the body.

  • The belief that humans only use 10% of their brains is incorrect. Each part of the brain has a specific function and the average person uses all the various parts of the brain.
  • The brain has a texture similar to tofu, and enough liquid to fill a 2 liter tank.
  • Thoughts create ‘pathways’ that connect different parts of the brain. The more we repeat a thought, the more that pathway will become more central, wide and stable. That is why it is important not to think over and over about negative things, because they become permanent, and strong, pathways in your mind, and the chances are will force themselves on you more and more.
  • We think about 70,000 thoughts a day. A large part of these are ‘automatic’ thoughts that we repeat a lot, using our most ‘established’ thought pathways.
  • Most people dream about 4-7 dreams a night. 50% of those dreams are forgotten in the first minutes after waking. And the one we remember is usually one we were either just dreaming or a mix of all the dreams we had put together. No wonder they always seem so confusing.
  • Sleep is usually the time the brain uses to organize and put together the memories is accumulated throughout the day. And so, in many cases, before making big decisions it’s better to ‘sleep on it’.
  • The messages between the various brain cells (neurons) are passed in the form of weak electrical pulses. The brain creates 23 watt of electricity while awake, enough to light a light bulb.
  • While we laugh, about 5 areas lit up in the brain simultaneously.
  • The brain isn’t fully developed until the teen years are over. Multitasking, showing empathy and good decision making are some of the skills that develop a little later.
  • The brain is constantly changing. Damage to one part of it may cause that part to change to a different location in the brain, especially if you are a baby or a child. Beyond that, every thought, experience or skill we encounter and learn changes the structure of our brain.
  • Memories aren’t built in a linear progression. We only remember ‘pictures’ or moments, and we put together a story from them ourselves. That is why it’s tricky to trust your memory, because you may have done some ‘editing’ without knowing it.
  • The brain alone uses 20% of all the oxygen we breathe and over 25% of the sugar we consume.
  • The human brain has more ‘wrinkles’ and crevices than those of other animals. In this way, the brain gets more surface space, while staying at around the same size, and it is part of the reason for our increased intelligence.

The Importance of Water for Athletes

Athletes always need to perform at their best level.

With the stakes high, the competition tough, the obstacles unrelenting, an athlete must do all he or she can to keep healthy and strong. In order to be able to win the gold, every aspect must be taken into account: stamina, agility, strength, reflex, technique, emotion, stress, endurance, and tactic just to name a few. These areas are influenced easily by external factors, most prominent being nutrition. The dietary component impacts all the categories mentioned.

In terms of diet and nutrition, it is imperative that proper portions of vitamins and minerals are consumed. It is absolutely indispensable that water intake is adequate. Water, a crucial element of every day becomes even more vital to athletes.

Unfortunately, dehydration is not an uncommon case for many athletes. Dehydration occurs when water intake is not sufficient enough to replace water loss. Whether one is playing professionally or simply recreationally, the importance of water is often understated. Up to sixty percent of an adult human body is composed of water. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates joints. It transports nutrients for energy and all in all keeps one healthy. If hydration levels drop, your body will not be able to perform at its highest level. Instead, you will give way to fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, and several more fatal symptoms.

For physical activity, one should typically:

– Drink 17 to 20 ounces of water approximately two to three hours before exercise

– Drink 8 ounces of water every half hour during warm-up

– Drink 7-10 ounces of water every ten to twenty minutes during exercise

– Drink 8 ounces of water no more than thirty minutes after you exercise

Since these are general guidelines, one should drink according to personal needs. There are no exact measurements, water intake should be according to length of exercise, humidity, environment conditions, and ones own hydration level.

If your body does not have enough water to go by, not only is one not at their best game, they can give way to heat illness. Heat illness can occur when your body cannot cool itself effectively, resulting in heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. In such ways, it does not matter if you are an athlete or not, anyone involved in a physical sport can suffer from dehydration and subsequent heat-related problems.

Next time you are out playing for your school, competing with your friends, exercising in hot weather-don’t forget to DRINK WATER!

Combating Air Pollution One Car at a Time

It’s no secret that humans are damaging the Earth. Whether our destructive actions are the result of monetary goals or personal benefit, the Earth has endured more harm than ever before.

One city in particular has taken the initiative to prevent air pollution from increasing any further. This city is none other than the “City of Love”- Paris.

In an effort to reduce air pollution, officials in Paris are issuing a temporary ban that prevents half of personal vehicles from driving on Monday. One in every 2 cars will be unable to drive on roads, says Mayor Anne Hidalgo. Cars with odd-numbered license plates and vehicles such as taxis and electric cars will be allowed to drive. The safety of Paris civilians will also not be jeopardized, as ambulances have the ability to drive as well.

AIR-POLLUTION

Why did Paris decide to reduce traffic by half?

This drastic action was the result of dangerously high pollution levels in the city. Paris has always had a history of air pollution (as does any other major city), and this type of regulation was incorporated last year as well.

Air pollution in Paris : Eiffel tower through a haze of pollution in Paris

This begs the question- is air pollution a serious problem in today’s world?

Believe it or not, air pollution has caused more deaths per year than AIDS and Malaria combined. Here are some statistics that portray the destructive potential of air pollution and pollution in general:

  • “Almost 3.3 million people die from outdoor air pollution every year”
  • “People who live in places with high levels of air pollutants have a 20% higher risk of death from lung cancer than people who live in less-polluted areas”
  • “Americans make up an estimated 5% of the world’s population. However, the US produces an estimated 30% of the world’s waste and uses 25% of the world’s resources”
  • “Approximately 40% of the lakes in America are too polluted for fishing, aquatic life, or swimming”
  • “14 billion pounds of garbage are dumped into the ocean every year”

plasticpollu

Of course, the dilemma of air pollution is only exacerbated with the industrialization of countries. Fortunately, technology has improved throughout the years and advancements such as the electric car aim to reduce the severity of pollution.

Nevertheless, it’s imperative that countries begin implementing plans to combat, and hopefully one day, eradicate air pollution.
